Uber boasts 50,000 drivers who are veterans, service members or military spouses -- and it wants to hire more.

Lyft, Uber, Gm Maven And The Potential Impact On The Military Community

The San Francisco company announced Thursday that it plans to offer bonuses for veteran referrals, expand its ride-hailing service to military bases and donate $1 million to organizations that support veterans and their families.

The move is part of an initiative announced 18 months ago called Uber Military, in which the ride-hailing company actively reaches out to veteran support firms to recruit drivers.

"When I came to Uber, I knew it was a perfect income opportunity for veterans transitioning [from the military] ... because they can start or stop working for any reason," said Emil Michael, Uber's vice president of commerce. Before joining Uber, Michael was a special assistant to the US Secretary of Defense, a job he says taught him about the challenges veterans face after leaving the military.

Marin Robert Isaac Jr., 35, of San Francisco, said he could rely on Uber as a source of income while retraining to become a user experience software designer. He now drives full-time for Uber as he looks for a job in that field.

"The biggest challenge for me is the uncertainty of what I'm going to do after I leave [the army]," said Isaac. and your family??"

As part of the hiring effort, Uber said it plans to lobby base commanders to take drivers to military bases and offer bonuses to those who make the trips.

The company is donating $1 million to organizations such as the US Chamber of Commerce Foundation, Hiring Our Heroes, Homes for Me Toops and the Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America.

On Wednesday, the Kansas team visited Ft. Riley, a military base outside of Manhattan, Kansas. The team was on site for a Hiring Heroes career fair hosted by the Department of Defense which attracted a crowd of more than 300 military members - most of whom will be leaving the service in the next year.
